My husband is having consistent problems with gout. He has tried prednisone, Colchichine (sp?), and some injections, all of which have helped some at times, but either not completely at the time, nor long-lasting. He has tried to eat a healthy diet – has knowledge of some of the problem foods. Now, the Dr. is suggesting a drug he will be on for the rest of his life.

Other suggestions? I would like for him to be able to look at it from a functional point of view. He has no interest in adding another medication. BUT . . . what can he do? The gout is extremely painful when it shows up. Any ideas???

    Thanks,
    Karen

      Hi Karen,
My husband has suffered from gout most of his life. He was also on Colchicine which was really hard on his stomach. I’m not for a moment suggesting your husband not seek medical attention, but I thought I’d share what has worked for my husband. He eats a handful of dried cherries every day…that’s it, other than avoiding known triggers. If he forgets to eat his cherries and he gets another bout, he gets a bottle of pure black cherry juice and drinks the whole thing that day. Even if it’s a really bad case, it’s usually gone in a day or so. I’ve seen him leave in the morning with his leg extended out to the side so that he can walk on his heel and avoid, as much as possible, any pressure on his toe because he is in so much agony and come home that night walking fine and in no pain. It truly is amazing what that juice can do.
I hope you get this reply and that it helps your husband. God bless,
      Karen

    wow !
your presentation was so clear and grounded! I hope everyone sought you out after to talk.
As a clinical nutritionist and nurse, I am so convinced of this approach and see slow movment toward this way of thinking in clients . I long for the system to come on board. It would truly honor our purpose and mission as health care professionals.
    thanks

Thank you for your message and your interest in Dr. Hyman’s work. To locate a practitioner of functional medicine in your area see the “Find a Functional Medicine Practitioner” link at the Institute of Functional Medicine’s website. Here you will find a place to enter your zip code and look for practitioner’s in your area that have completed the institute’s five-day training course in functional medicine. Understand that not all of the doctors listed here will fit your particular needs. Many different medical professionals complete this training, and you will have to do additional research on your own regarding a particular practitioner’s approach and whether or not it fits your specific medical requirements. This may include calling the practioner’s office, visiting his or her website, and/or scheduling a consultation.

Wow….really blew me away! I’ve been sick for many years and have seen too many practitioners that have done nothing for me. I’ve read 2 of your books, but seeing this presentation has really convinced me that I’ve got to make an appointment at your clinic.

  5. Kathy Keating June 13, 2011 at 6:09 pm #

My visits with Dr. Hyman transformed my health. Best thing I ever did. I highly recommend attending his workshops, reading his books and, if you can, visiting his clinic.

This was fantastic and it should be how we are being treated. It just makes so much
sense. I will surely be passing this on.

I am researching Fibromyalgia because I am a chronic sufferer. I do believe all the symptoms I have (that points to the so-called ’cause’ being Fibromyalgia does not make sense. I believe the root of my problem stems from a lifetime of having experienced chronic depression and life emotional traumas. Frankly, all the pain from life I have knows finally settled into my bones and muscles. I can’t imagine any other explanation. My energy level has been affected…and my body aches as though I have the flu. This is terribly frustrating and causes major life-interruption in my ability to keep up and survive.

Anyone with helpful thoughts… please contact me. LC

I got all the weird symptom, allergy is the worst and now I was diagnose with hypothyroid. My body is not working normal even of thyroid med. I believed I have autoimmune too. I hope this is not happenning to anybody out there.

Oh my goodness. This is a been-there-done-that story. My daughter is in the autism spectrum (very high functioning) and when she was in second grade, her already difficult behavior became nearly intolerable. We were desperate and sad, but determined. We found a doctor in Delevan, WI (we lived in Madison, WI) – Dr. John Hicks, who practices functional medicine.

He did what Dr. Hyman does. Much of what Dr. Hyman talks about in treating his patients, my daughter experienced. Recently, I found a journal that she was keeping at the time. To see her handwriting from entries immediately before she started treatment in October 2002 to a journal entry in February 2003 — about four months of treatment — is stunning. When Dr. Hyman showed the comparison of Clayton’s handwriting, I was so happy to see that someone had documented a child’s progress in that way.

My daughter is now 16. Our level of control over her eating and her health is diminished. I wish we could find a way to convince her that many of the issues that cause her difficulty now — socially, emotionally and physically — could be addressed wholistically if she were willing. (She still has beautiful handwriting.)

Finally, someone who makes sense! Unless we deep dive into the underlying CAUSES of our illnesses, we will always be handing out bandages. Thank you for this presentation and to your dedication to true health and wellness.

Great job Doctor. I hope to meet you in person one day. I am a 21 year old Indian woman suffering from chronic autoimmune thyroiditis for the last 2 years. All that the doctors here know to do is prescribe high doses of synthyroid which my body can not tolerate. In the meanwhile I was given Prednisone to check the inflammation, but on withdrawing it there has been a chronic pressure and pain in the left back portion of my head. Since my C.T. and M.R.I scans are normal the doctors have not been able to provide me with a diagnosis or treat my condition effectively. Anyways thank you for enlightening us and sharing the beautiful work that you are doing for people.

i practice chinese medicine in new york city. the approach dr. hyman is advocating (which is “novel” for western medicine) is what i and my professional forebears have been doing for 4000 years. i’m glad western doctors are catching up! great piece.

  23. Steffan Santoro October 26, 2011 at 1:41 pm #

It’s nice to hear an MD espousing what Chinese Medicine has been saying for the last few millenia. Our natural state, when not undernourished or overburdened, is health. Dis-ease is only the interruption of the normal (healthy) functions of the body’s systems working in harmony. It’s as simple as removing any impediments and/or supplementing any deficiencies. All of this can be observed and corrected BEFORE a disease process is allowed to progress to the point of infirmity or health crisis. All it takes is a comprehensive and wide-angle view of a person as a whole. This is the future of medicine. I envision us moving even beyond “blockbuster drugs” for any purpose. Hippocrates, the “Father of Western Medicine” said, “Let food be your medicine.” If we realize that health is about maintaining balance rather than trying to correct it after we fall over we will be well on our way to our optimum well-being. : )

I loved this TED talk. I have been a fan of TED and respect the calibre of their speakers. Thank you for the self-disclosure. That also adds to your credibility. I’ve tried many systems, diets, health fads, and sincerely hoped the Blood Sugar Solution was not another gimmick to get people to buy products. I don’t think it is. My husband and I are reading the book and have started to make shifts in our thinking and in our behavior around food and supplements and I feel better already in 5 days time. Thank you for giving me HOPE!
